The fuzz, more properly called felt, is usually made of wool treated with various additives to make it last longer and resist staining. The felt is designed with a specific court surface in mind:

Extra duty: Designed primarily for hard courts. This is denser felt that can take heavy abrasion.
Regular duty: For clay and most indoor courts. This is finer felt designed not to fluff up excessively.

A pressurized ball loses its bounce gradually with play or storage as air seeps out, much as would an inflatable basketball. Many players use the typical pressurized ball for three to six sets of play, or three hours of practice, then throw them away.

Once the ball can is opened, a regularly stored ball looses bounce and plays dead within three to five weeks. A dead ball ruins learning and can cause tennis elbow problems.

How do we determine when to reach for a new ball? Drop the ball from 100 inches onto a hard court. The regulation bounce back is 53–58 inches. If the bounce is substantially lower or higher (as when felt has worn out), reach for a new one.

What's with the number on the ball? The numbers on the balls are only there to help people distinguish their balls from another can of the same brand on an adjacent court. Red print is generally used on clay-court balls, black print on hard-court balls.
